One crew, three campsites, four nights on the Big Sur River. The plan, food, packing, shopping and live shared checklists are all here.

⚠️ Fire update · verified September 4

The northern Highway 1 closure near camp lifted September 3, so the campground approach from Carmel is open again. The Timber and Plaskett fires remain active, five Big Sur state parks are closed, and the southern highway closure blocks the Sand Dollar/Jade Cove plan. Conditions are still changing; confirm the campground directly before departure. Open Fire Status →

Expedition roster · 9

  • Adults: Seann, Morgan, Gigi, Courtney, Sammy
  • Kids: Hayes, Lincoln, Lochlan, Dillon
  • Camp: three sites, one shared group

No site-by-site meal split. Everyone eats together.

Meal count: every meal is planned for all nine people.

The drive

  • Out: leave home by 6:00 AM Thu. US-101 N → Salinas → Hwy 68 W → Hwy 1 S. ~5h30 driving, at camp ~1:00 PM.
  • Back: depart 11:00 AM Mon. Breakfast at site, lunch on the road.
  • Do not take Hwy 1 north from SLO — roughly 2 extra hours of switchbacks for the group.
Before the canyon: fill up in Salinas/Monterey · download offline maps · bring cash in case fee areas reopen · budget +10–25 min for one-way signal controls · no cell service Carmel → Cambria.

Sunset & the shape of a day

Sunset is ~7:10 PM all four nights; every state park closes at sunset (Point Lobos 7:00, last entry 6:30). Fog is grey and 52–58°F from 6–9 AM and burns off 10–11 AM — clear and 68–78°F noon to 5 PM is your window, best light 5–7 PM.

The one rule: the whole coast is one road — you can't combine north and south in the same day. Pick a direction each morning and commit. Use the Day Planner →

Timber + Plaskett Fires Verified Sept 4

Two active fires are affecting the Big Sur coast. Access to camp from the north has reopened, but major park closures and the southern Highway 1 closure still remove much of the original activity plan.

What changed: Caltrans lifted the northern Timber Fire closure at 6:00 AM September 3. The remaining southern closure runs from Pacific Valley at Post Mile 16 to the Monterey/San Luis Obispo county line, supporting the Plaskett Fire response. The trip remains conditional on fire behavior, park status, smoke and the campground's own operating decision.

These numbers can change several times a day. Treat the links below as the source of truth, not this snapshot, and call the campground before making the final go/no-go decision.

🔴 Closed "until further notice"

ClosedNormally your…
Pfeiffer Big Sur SPriver swimming, the Gorge scramble, Pfeiffer Falls — 2 mi from camp
Julia Pfeiffer Burns SPMcWay Falls, Partington Cove
Andrew Molera SPriver-mouth beach, condor center
Point Sur SHPlighthouse tours
Limekiln SPtrails, beach and south-coast stop
Southern Highway 1Sand Dollar Beach, Jade Cove and the through-route south

State Parks lists Point Sur, Andrew Molera, Pfeiffer Big Sur, Julia Pfeiffer Burns and Limekiln closed until further notice. Do not plan around a reopening; treat any restored access as a bonus.

🟡 What is currently usable

Access from the north: Caltrans reopened the Timber Fire closure from just south of Little Sur River to just south of Big Sur Post Office on September 3. The planned approach through Salinas, Carmel and Highway 1 south is therefore the correct route.

North-day options: Point Lobos, Carmel and the open portions of Garrapata remain the strongest activity direction, subject to smoke and any new emergency closure.

South-day options: remove Sand Dollar and Jade Cove for now. The Plaskett Fire closure blocks that stretch of Highway 1, and Limekiln is closed.

Campground status: the official road reopening makes access possible; it does not confirm the private campground's operations. Call (831) 667-2322 before departure.

✅ Verify 2–3 days before we leave — in this order

  1. CAL FIRE Timber Fire page — containment, declared out?
  2. State Parks Monterey District status — or call 831-649-2836
  3. Los Padres NF alerts — has Sycamore Canyon Rd reopened?
  4. Caltrans SR-1 conditions + QuickMap
  5. Call the campground: (831) 667-2322. They'll know more than any website — and ask what a partial-refund conversation looks like if the surrounding parks are still shut.
Check AirNow for smoke daily — we have a 3-year-old exercising outdoors.

Activities A menu, not a schedule

The whole coast is one road — pick a direction each morning. Below is every option with its current fire status.

🟢 open unaffected🔴 closed by the fire, may reopen🟡 caveat read the note

🅐 Far North Day — Point Lobos + Garrapata 🟢 all open

~50 mi round trip · 1.5–2 hrs in the car · your best full day if the parks stay closed

StopDetails
Point Lobos 🟢$10/vehicle, 8 AM–7 PM, no reservation. Go at the 8 AM opening — small lots fill by 9–10 on weekends. Weston Beach = best tide-pooling in the region. Easy kid trails: Cypress Grove, Bird Island, South Shore. ⚠️ Swimming prohibited at China Cove & Gibson — set that expectation in the car.
Garrapata / Soberanes 🟢Free, no kiosk, shoulder parking. Easy 1–1.5 mi headland loop. ⚠️ Kids hold hands crossing Hwy 1 (55 mph, no barrier). Skip Calla Lily Valley — dry ravine in Sept.
Carmel River Beach lagoon 🟢Free, shallow, protected — one of the very few safe salt-water spots for kids.
Bixby Bridge 🟡Drive-by only. 12-month no-parking pilot (Aug 4, 2026) bans parking near the bridge & Old Coast Rd. Best in-car view is the southbound approach.
Add-on: Monterey Bay Aquarium, 30 min past Carmel. $65 adult / $50 youth / under-5 free, timed tickets in advance. Monterey County residents free Sept 8–20 (covers our trip → busier). Best as a smoke/fog-day fallback.

🅑 Home Day — walk out the door 🟡 confirm camp

0–25 min driving · the private campground must confirm operations; nearby state parks remain closed

SpotDetails
Pfeiffer Big Sur SP 🔴2 mi, $10. The Big Sur River Gorge is the single best match for our kids — ½ mi of rock scrambling & wading to a granite swimming hole. Traction shoes mandatory. Shallow gravel bars for Lochlan, deeper pools for Hayes & Lincoln.
Andrew Molera 🔴4.5 mi N, $10. Flat 1 mi walk to river-mouth beach + protected lagoon + a California Condor Discovery Center the older two would love.
The campground itself 🟡Big Sur River frontage, inner tubes and playground. The northern road is open, but call the campground to confirm operations and on-site amenities before departure.

🅒 South Short Day 🔴

Partington + McWay · ~24 mi RT · fire-dependent

Partington Cove — a 60-ft hand-cut 1880s tunnel through solid rock onto a granite cove. 1.5 mi RT, 270 ft down & back (carry Lochlan out). ⚠️ Not a swim — surge channel, no exit. Before 10 AM for parking.

McWay Falls — reset expectations: no beach access ever, overlook trail closed since Apr 2025. A roadside glimpse, 20 min, best in afternoon light. Pair with a campground river afternoon.

🅓 Far South Day 🔴 currently unavailable

Sand Dollar + Jade Cove · blocked by the Plaskett Fire highway closure

Sand Dollar Beach — inside the current southern closure. Do not route here unless Caltrans explicitly reopens the Pacific Valley segment.

Jade Cove — also unavailable from camp while the closure remains. Keep the original notes as a contingency only if the fire and road status materially improve.

✂️ Cut these

  • Piedras Blancas elephant seals — 4.5 hrs driving RT, and September is the emptiest month at the rookery.
  • Calla Lily Valley — wrong season (blooms Feb–mid-April).
  • Pfeiffer Beach keyhole light beam — does not happen in September (needs mid-Dec to mid-Jan sun). Anyone saying otherwise is wrong.
  • Limekiln SP — closed until further notice under the September 3 State Parks fire order.

Tides — the honest bad news

Every real low tide falls between 11 PM–3 AM, in the dark. Daytime lows are all +3.0 to +3.5 ft, which barely uncovers anything (a good tide here is +1.0 or lower).

Best available daytime low
Sun Sept 20, 11:45 AM–2 PMlow 3.29 ft at 12:48 — your best usable slot. Weston Beach, Point Lobos
Thu Sept 17, 7:15–9:15 AMlow 3.24 ft at 08:15 — but you're driving
Safety consequence: on Sept 17, 18 & 19 the tide rises through the whole afternoon. Any rock-bound cove — Jade, Partington, base of Garrapata — is on incoming water all afternoon. Do the scrambling coves in the morning those days.

The Food Meals for 9

Four dinners, four site breakfasts and four lunches, all planned for nine people.

Dinners

Thu

Chili

Morgan's recipe, made at home & frozen flat — also the biggest ice block on the drive. Reheat in the big pot after setup.

Base: ground beef + sausage, canned Mexican stewed tomatoes, roma, red onion, jalapeño, cilantro, salt. Toppings: cheddar, sour cream, Fritos, diced onion, cilantro.

Group batch: nine bowls with plenty of toppings.
Fri

Foil packets over the fire

Nine packets assembled at home, double-wrapped and labeled.

Each packet: sausage and/or chicken thigh + baby potatoes + bell pepper + zucchini + onion + seasoning + butter.

Sat

Spaghetti + sausage meat sauce

Sauce made at home & frozen flat. Cook pasta and sausage meat sauce for nine.

Sun

Hot dogs + Hot Dog Chili

Easiest last night, almost no cleanup before pack-out.

Hot dogs and buns for nine, Great Value Hot Dog Chili (Hayes's favorite), diced onion, ketchup, mustard and cheddar.

🅕 Flex / backup — bean & cheese burritos. Everything shelf-stable (refried beans, tortillas, cheese, salsa, sour cream). Costs nothing in cooler space — insurance for a long day, a smoke day, or a dinner that falls apart.

Breakfasts

Every morning, no cooking: Hostess chocolate mini-donuts (white bag — non-negotiable tradition), Costco muffins and bananas for nine, plus percolator coffee and hot chocolate. Bacon and eggs are planned for nine whenever they are cooked.

MorningCooked
FridayBacon + scrambled eggs
SaturdayPancakes + bacon
SundayBacon + eggs + bagels with cream cheese or PB
MondayBacon + eggs, one skillet, then pack out

Backup: one box of instant oatmeal for Lincoln. The office coffee is free but weak — bring the percolator & your own grounds.

Lunches

Thu

In the car, zero prep

Built Wed night, wrapped & labeled by person.

Nine sandwiches: turkey & cheese, salami & cheese, and PB&J for Lincoln.

Fri

On the go

Nine deli sandwiches, fruit and chips. Assemble at the picnic table and load the soft cooler.

Sat

Rotisserie chicken picnic

Three Costco chickens, meat pulled Wed & bagged. Serve cold with crackers, sliced cheddar, grapes and baby carrots.

Sun

Cooler cleanout

PB&J, salami & cheese, whatever's left — the meal that empties the small cooler.

🍜 Cup o' Noodles — always available, never scheduled. Needs boiling water = a site item, not a trail item. Boil a pot at breakfast; fill a thermos before we leave for a picky road day.

Snacks, drinks & s'mores

Snacks (site + car)

Watermelon (cut at home), grapes, apples, bananas, Funions, granola bars, meat sticks, gummies, string cheese, applesauce pouches, Goldfish.

Drinks & s'mores

Drinks: water (Costco flats), iced tea, hydration packets, hot chocolate, ground coffee + creamer.

S'mores all four nights: graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate bars.

Coolers — three, each with a job

Free ice at the campground office — top off every day from Thursday afternoon. That's the whole ice strategy; you buy none. Ice on the drive up = frozen food + frozen small water bottles.

1 · Big Yeti — deep storage

Rarely opened. Frozen chili & sauce, foil packets, bacon, eggs, raw dogs, deli meat, cheese. Frozen bags on the bottom as the ice mass, frozen water bottles layered in.

2 · Drink & snack — kid-accessible

Water, iced tea, hydration, string cheese, applesauce, cut fruit. Opened forty times a day — keeping it separate protects the Yeti.

3 · Chef's small cooler

Seann's cheddar, salami, hard-boiled eggs, avocados, butter and roll-ups. Plus a soft cooler / day pack for group lunches.

Packing Tap to check off

Sleeping assignments stay specific to Seann, Morgan and the kids; camp and kitchen equipment supports the shared group. Bold = new or changed since Morgan's April list.

Shopping By store

Generic / Great Value assumed throughout. Quantities cover all nine people.

Prep Home, before Thursday

The what before Thursday. All group prep covers nine people.

Non-food, start early: the paracord, and 3D-printing the line tensioners & clothesline hooks — printer time is the long pole. Also: download movies to the iPads and offline maps to your phone. No service up there.

Safety The parts that matter

The one that matters most

Your kids' swimming ability is close to irrelevant to the real risk. Big Sur ocean deaths are sneaker waves and rip currents — knee-deep one second, chest-deep the next, on a steep beach, 53–58°F water, no lifeguard, no cell service. Competitive swimmers drown in these conditions. Cold-water confidence is an asset in a river gorge and a liability on an open beach. No lifeguards anywhere on this coast.

Where can we swim?

WhereSwim?
Big Sur River — campground & Pfeiffer SP✅ Yes — the safe swim. Gravel bars for Lochlan, pools for the older two
Big Sur River Gorge✅ Yes, with adults. Traction shoes mandatory
Carmel River State Beach lagoon✅ Yes — lagoon only, never the open beach beside it
Sand Dollar Beach❌ Currently inaccessible — inside the Plaskett Fire highway closure; reassess only after an official reopening
Pfeiffer Beach❌ No — rips, sneaker waves, rock. Creek-lagoon wading only
Garrapata Beach❌ No — steep, powerful shorebreak, notorious for rescues
Partington · Jade Cove❌ No — surge channels, no exit
China Cove / Gibson, Point Lobos❌ Prohibited
McWay Cove❌ No access
Family rule: never turn your back on the ocean, never stand on a wet rock or in the wave-wash zone. If the sand is wet, waves have reached it. Watch a full 15 minutes of sets before deciding where Lochlan plays.

Poison oak

Abundant and unavoidable, heaviest along the river and shaded trail edges. In September it's often red or leafless bare stems kids won't recognize — just as potent. Long pants on every hike, Tecnu in the kit, wash those clothes separately.

Ticks

Monterey County is Lyme-endemic. Tuck socks, full-body check every night — especially Lochlan's hairline. Fine tweezers / tick remover in the kit.

Also on the list

  • Unstable undercut cliffs — the fences aren't decorative.
  • Rattlesnakes on warm canyon trails.
  • Mountain lions — keep kids in front of you, never let one run ahead.
  • Roadside parking at Garrapata & Partington means standing near 55 mph traffic.
  • No cell service — agree on a meeting point at every single stop.
  • If parks reopen post-fire: burned/falling trees, loose rock, unstable slopes. Stay on trail.
